Dear ’mates:  Can you believe that Commissioning Week is almost upon us?  The class of 2011 will soon graduate and join the Fleet and the Corps.  Congratulations ’11, and welcome to the alumni family!

The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation raised $35.5 million in their 2010 Great Strides campaign.  Congratulations and thanks to Bill Squires and his family who headed the number one fund-raising team in the country.  “Sean’s Pals” brought in $240,000 for cystic fibrosis research. Money buys science, and science buys life.  Bravo Zulu to Bill, Jodi, Ashley, Sydney, and Sean!

UFood Restaurant Group Inc. has formed a Health & Nutrition Advisory Panel, comprised of current and retired military members, to advise the company as it continues to explore development opportunities on military bases. UFood Grill is committed to offering consumers food that is both delicious and nutritious, with a wide-ranging menu that includes lean burgers, rice bowls, salads, wraps and smoothies. The company currently has eight locations in Boston, Dallas and Cleveland, including airports, urban areas and Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas.  Among other activities, the volunteer panel will convene bi-annually to review menu development and discuss trends in health, nutrition and diet—in particular the dietary needs of the military.  Mark Milliken is volunteering on this panel.  He gets to improve the quality, taste, and nutritional value of the food offered to our active duty members.  Plus, he gets to sample all the lean burgers he can eat.  I can’t think of a more qualified classmate.

With the 2011 Brigade Boxing championships recently completed, JJ Cuff sent this memory jogger.

“Plebe Summer Boxing championships were held August 13, 1971.  LCDR Tom McKechnie USN was the Referee and the judges were CDR Frank Brady USN, Maj. Jarve Lynch USMC and LCDR Jon Batchler USNR. Finalists and semifinalists were: 127#: Tim McCorry and Ed Graves; 135#: Glen MacLeod and Lamar Chapman; 145#: Bo Castleberry, Reece Beck, Mike Bannon, and William Boyd; 155#: Ed Trainor, Paul Reardon, Dan Wick, and Rick Tryon; 165#: Chuck Brown, Mark Satorious, Robert Williams, and Greg Swider; 175#: Skip Lind, Ross Davis, Tom Jones, Dave Wood, Mick Clements, and Rick Rush; Heavyweight: Pat Guertin, John Brodhead, Dave Simons, and Cliff Collier.”

Tom Kelley sent a note following the 35th—which he attended with wife Carole and 21-year old daughter Molly.

“We went to the Midstore, of course.  I remember how amused I was as a midshipman when I spotted Alumni burdened down like mules in the Sierra Madre with armfuls of anything blue-and gold.  Of course, there were Carole and Molly walking up and down the aisles with shirts, pennants, stationary, etc.  We bumped into many classmates doing the same thing.  Instead of the official 1975 Dinner-Dance, 25th company had a ‘private’ dinner at the Rockfish restaurant in Eastport; we thought that there would be plenty of time to see other classmates at the Tailgate.  It allowed us reminisce, swap tales, etc. at the company level.  Attendees included: Carole and Tom Kelley, Keno Knieriem and his date, Desiree and George Melnychenko, Karen and Denis Powers, Diane and Lunce Bass, Trish and Mike Groothousen, Bob Giuda, and a surprise guest—JT Manvel ’72—one of our firsties.  JT looked well and had an update on the rest of our firsties.  And talk about dedication!  Bob (a United airlines pilot) flew in from Frankfurt on Friday night (to Dulles), rented a car, and made it to the restaurant (for after dinner drinks).  The accompanying picture shows, Mike, Lunce, Denis, George, me, Bob, and JT; Keno left before we took the picture.  Everyone from the dinner was at the tailgate.  Chris and Jim Thoms also joined.  We all had a great time at the tailgate and the game—despite the final score.”

Tom relayed some information about retired Blackshoe Gator Paul Viscovich.  Paul and Christine are justifiably proud of their children. Daughter Alexandra is a senior in Navy ROTC. She will start flight training at NAS Pensacola next year.  Son Andrew recently received his commercial pilot license, and younger son Cameron is a sophomore majoring in Asian Studies.  He recently spent time studying in China.  Finally, Tom sent a wonderful picture from his oldest daughter’s wedding in June 2010.  Megan is a nurse and Dan is an IT specialist working on contracts for the DoD.

Picking up where we left off last issue, here is more of Ken Hart’s 2010 14th company update.

Darleen and Jon Greenert have been back in DC since August 2009.  The admiral expects to be "up or out" by mid 2011.  Sarah (22) graduated from Penn State in May and is with her parents as they work on "job placement".  Jon (27) is an NCIS agent assigned to the carrier GEORGE WASHINGTON in Yokosuka, Japan.  He and Susan have enjoyed the opportunity but will be ready to come back to CONUS in about a year.  Brian (25) is a LTjg on the USS LASSEN (DDG 82) also in Japan.  The boys live 15 minutes apart.  Darleen has reconnected with old friends around DC and the Greenerts find it been great to see so many company mates at the 35th and at other opportunities.

Deb and Jim Gabor moved from Maine to VA Beach for a few years, thanks to BRAC.  Jim is still with NWDC, very busy but happy.  Deb hated to leave their children and Maine’s four seasons.  But family and friends have been visiting, and the Gabors have been touring the area, even up to DC and USNA and back to Maine.  "Fall Foliage" was beautiful in VA.  Summer was too hot for Deb—thank goodness for central A/C.  The Gabors are about a five minute walk from the beach (a pretty good reason for visitors to travel), plus Colonial Williamsburg and Busch Gardens are not far—if you time the tunnel traffic and are lucky.  They had a private tour of USNA with Mark Harper at the Reunion and met up with Joanne and Becky Lingerfelt at the Greenert's home while in D.C.  They admit that they could not have accomplished as much with family and friends if they were still in Maine.  But Jim thinks that their 100+ year old ME house has more insulation than their 25-year-old condo in VA.

Sandra and Scott Bauer had an amazing 2010.  In January Scott moved to Washington, DC to begin his temporary assignment at the Nuclear Energy Institute.  He is there representing STARS—the alliance of nuclear power plants of which his home plant (the Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station) is a part.  He is officially the STARS Washington Representative and will serve in this position for at least two years.  In this capacity he works for STARS half time and for NEI the other half of the time.  From January to June they had a distance relationship with Sandra still hard at work at Cheyenne Elementary School and working on her Masters Degree at Arizona State University.  In June they were thankful to end the separation when Sandra moved east.  On July 2nd a fourth granddaughter was born, They love and cherish each one of them as much as their five beautiful children--Elisha, Miriam, Andy, Katie and Jamie.  Elisha is living and working in the Phoenix area and is about to attempt up to finish off his Bachelor’s degree.  Miriam and her husband Patrick and our first three granddaughters live in Haugen, WI. Andy enlisted in the Army and spent most of 2010 in Georgia going to boot camp and satellite communications training.  In late October he went to his first duty station in South Korea.  Katie and Bret are living in the Bauer house in Peoria with our newest granddaughter Madi while Scott and Sandra are away.  Katie is in her 2nd year of Law School.  Jamie (last because she is the baby, but not least) graduated from Arizona State University with a degree in accounting and is working for a family friend in his CPA business.  Jamie was scheduled to complete her CPA exam in January.  She recently bought her own home. Since the Bauers have been in DC they’ve had a steady stream of visitors.  Sandra has become quite the tour guide and managed to finish her Masters Degree (Hooray). On the side she volunteers for World Vision’s International headquarters (just across the street from their apartment) and for the DC school system. For Thanksgiving they couldn’t decide who to visit so they went on a cruise out of Fort Lauderdale to the eastern Caribbean for a week and had the most delightful time. The highlight of the trip for Sandra was swimming with and holding a stingray in Grand Turk.  She even kissed the stupid thing (no after affects as of yet).

Well, that’s all the space we have for this issue.  Back with more next Shipmate ---  ’75 Sir!  Larry
